Resource Description:

For many staff it can be challenging to address the range of potential health needs a client may have during a given clinic visit. With the Providing Quality Family Planning Recommendations (QFP), we now have clear and evidence-based guidance on how to:

  • Determine a client's need for a range of services and their reproductive life plan
  • Provide counseling on contraception, pregnancy testing, achieving pregnancy and basic infertility, sexually transmitted infections, preconception health, related preventive health and referrals

This FREE series consists of six training opportunities that will help you put the QFP recommendations into practice. During the next few months, each session of the series will focus on a different aspect of the QFP recommendations. The topics include:

#5 Providing Quality Contraceptive Counseling and Education: A Toolkit for Training Staff

Providing quality contraceptive counseling is an essential component of client-centered, culturally proficient care. This toolkit is based on the QFP and contains an overview of the Prinicples for Providing Quality Counseling. It is designed for staff trainers who work in a family planning or reproductive healthcare setting and includes training activities, materials and job aids that can be used with individuals or in group settings.

#6 Pregnancy Testing and Counseling

Pregnancy testing is a common reason for a client to visit a provider of family planning services. The purpose of this eLearning course is for the participant to be better informed of expected standards for quality pregnancy testing and counseling services. This course contains key elements to include when giving clients both positive and negative test results using brief case scenarios and discussing the options available for pregnant women using a brief videotaped counseling scenario.
